The museum usually has three exhibitions at the same time, and they change frequently. There are about 16 different exhibitions a year. So every visit to the museum is going to be different and gives you something new to look at, whenever you return.The museum shows a wide variety of genres ranging from historical pictures and art photography to street photography and fashion photography. Good for Photographers.
Amsterdam is ableist! There was an elevator, but it wasn't working? Sure, I didn't ask to use it, but then again, they should've noticed me stumbling all over the place and invited me to use it if so. The stairs are steep and treacherous otherwise. I'm sure it depends on what the exhibit is, but as a connoisseur of all things photo, I found it engaging and the layout, though claustrophobic at times, was unique and lent itself to a "small gallery" Not crowded midday midweek. Gift shop is plentiful. Cost at €16 is slightly higher than it should be, in my opinion.

Immersive as ever
Traditional canalside house completely repurposed inside. Really nice atmosphere, cafe in basement (note: no lift access to basement) Main exhibition this visit was work of black photographer Ernest Cole who chronicled Apartheid South Africa at great personal risk. Always something to take away.
Eye opening and well-presented
Nice museum, nice space. Really enjoyed the primary exhibition, a poignant retrospective of a single photographer's chronicle of the repressive and grossly inequitable travesty of apartheid in the 1960s. Appreciate that a Dutch museum would wrestle with its history in this way.
Mooie exposities
Exposities met werk van Paul Huf (nog tm 02/02/2025), Koos Breukel en Saul Leiter bezocht. Drie mooie en interessante exposities in uiteenlopende stijlen. Wel erg druk (wij waren er zondagmiddag, kan aan het tijdstip liggen).
Een must-visit voor fotografie liefhebbers!
Als Amsterdamse local kom ik regelmatig bij FOAM en het blijft me verrassen. De tentoonstellingen zijn veelzijdig en de manier waarop de ruimte wordt aangepast aan de exposities maakt elke bezoek iets nieuws. Het gebouw zelf, met meerdere verdiepingen en intieme kamers, zorgt ervoor dat je echt wordt meegenomen in de kunst. Afgelopen maanden was de expositie van Viviane Sassen bijzonder indrukwekkend. Haar werk, met sterke contrasten en surrealistische elementen, kwam prachtig tot zijn recht. FOAM weet altijd een goede balans te vinden tussen grote namen en opkomend talent, waardoor je zowel bekende fotografen als vernieuwende perspectieven ontdekt. De museumwinkel is zeker een bezoek waard, met een mooie selectie boeken en prints. Een aanrader voor iedereen die van fotografie houdt!
Interessante expo's in leuk museum
FOAM staat voor FOtografiemuseum AMsterdam en is al bijna twee decennia gevestigd aan de Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Het museum beslaat drie grachtenpanden, die door overdekte doorgangen en trappen met elkaar zijn verbonden. Niet onbelangrijk bij zo'n kruip-door-sluip-door indeling ... er is een lift. Wij bekeken er twee solo-expo's. Eén toonde het werk van beeldend kunstenaar en fotografe Viviane Sassen (*Amsterdam 1952). Boeiend werk waarin diverse disciplines samenkomen. De tweede tentoonstelling behandelde het werk van de bekende fotograaf Paul Huf (1924-2002). Te zien was o.a. zijn werk rond modereportages en reclamecampagnes. Dit deel van zijn oeuvre riep duidelijk een "oh ja, dat ken ik nog" gevoel op. Wie kent niet de jarenlange Grolsch-reclames rond het thema Vakmanschap is Meesterschap"? Maar in Huf's werk vallen toch het meest de prachtige zwart-wit portretten op van bekende en minder bekende Nederlanders. Twee mooie expo's in een leuk museum, dat we wat vaker gaan bezoeken.
Fotografie in vielen Facetten
"Wir verbinden verschiedene Ansichten, Visionen und Perspektiven, die jeden dazu einladen, sie zu erkunden" - so beschreibt sich das Foam selbst. Das muss und kann nicht allen gefallen. Die umfangreiche, hochmoderne Website bietet einen ersten Eindruck und geht mit ihrem digitalen Magazin und dem Blog noch weit über das Angebot des physischen Museums hinaus. Auch architektonisch kombiniert das Haus unterschiedliche Elemente: Eine historische Fassade mit einem modernen Innenleben und einem verwinkeltem Altbau. Daher ist es nicht barrierefrei. Mit meiner I amsterdam City-Card ist der Eintritt frei. Im Erdgeschoß ist es sehr kalt, weil trotz frühherbstlicher Außentemperaturen die Klimaanlage auf Hochtouren läuft. Hier ist Raum für großformatige, abstraktere Arbeiten, die mich persönlich nicht angesprochen haben. Ganz anders ging es mir mit der Retrospektive zu dem türkischen Fotojournalisten Ara Güler. Doch das Foam hat noch mehr zu bieten. Wer, der unklaren Beschilderung folgend, die steilen Treppen erklimmt, findet unter dem Dach die Galerie der hauseigenen Foam Editions, wo auch Fotografien erworben werden können. Im Tiefparterre befinden sich der Buchladen und das, auch öffentlich zugängliche, Café. Altijd goed
Fijn museum,.met altijd interessante tentoonstellingen. Het is niet erg groot, maar zeker een bezoek meer dan waard. De horeca is goed en je kan er mooie boeken kopen. Een absolute aanrader in Amsterdam.
Fans für Fotografie
Das Museum ist wirklich für Fotogeafiebegeisterte. Man sollte sich viel Zeit nehmen, um die Details und "Message" zu entdecken. Die Kunstobjekte sind sehr sorgfältig ausgewählt. Man kommt immer wieder ins Staunen.
Serata ideale
Sono andata durante l'apertura notturna, l'esposizione di onishi era mozzafiato. Ho apprezzato molto lo spazio espositivo che risaltava le foto senza essere invasivo, e l'atmosfera raccolta. Pannelli esplicativi molto interessanti. Vorrei abitare ad Amsterdam solo per non perdermi nemmeno una loro mostra.
Alec Soth mooie expositie in Foam
De tentoonstelling Alec Soth - I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating. Heel bijzonder om deze tussen de lock-downs te hebben kunnen zien. Eerder in Antwerpen "Sleeping by the Mississippi gezien". Door deze fotograaf wordt met veel zorg de mens in zijn omgeving gezocht en uitgelicht. De persoonlijke leefomgeving staat voorop. Foto's van werk uiteraard copy-righted, maar goed te vinden op het internet. Enkel shot's in Museum onder kunstenaars alias Drager Meurtant toegevoegd. Blijft alert, geduldig...
Lieu sympa
Musée « dédale » avec plein de petits escaliers, petits coins cachés, on monte, on descend, un jardin derrière avec beaucoup de charme, très sympa. L’expo actuelle étant sur des photos du vieux Paris évidemment on aurait espéré plus dépaysant mais sympa quand même.
Expositions temporaires seulement
Il n'y a pas d'exposition permanente dans ce musée, seulement des expositions temporaires donc même si elles sont toujours de grande qualité vous l'appréciez en fonction des photographes exposés au moment où vous le visiterez. C'est Brassaï qui a actuellement l'honneur d'occuper la plus grande partie des salles du musée : même quand on est français et qu'on croit bien le connaître on a le plaisir de découvrir quelques clichés rares et une présentation intéressante de son œuvre. Un photographe et artiste plasticien italien qui est un véritable magicien de la couleur est exposé au rez-de-chaussée et un photographe plus sulfureux dans les combles. Le bâtiment est très beau.
Un très bel endroit
L’exposition était très intéressante, le bâtiment en lui même a beaucoup de charme alliant le moderne à l’ancien. Je recommande vivement ce musée qui change des musées « traditionnels »
Beau lieu
Belle expo vue ce mois de janvier dans un lieu bien conçu. L’accueil est très agréable. L’expo en question bien mise en scène.
Sala de exposiciones de fotografía recomendable
FOAM es más una sala de exposiciones que un museo propiamente dicho (como aparece en algunas guías). La oferta varía con frecuencia, y se pueden ver exposiciones de artistas emergentes junto a otras de autores consolidados, por unos 11€. Para ver en poco más de una hora, buen plan si te gusta la fotografía y el arte contemporáneo, o estás huyendo de la lluvia.
Trevligt litet fotografimuseum
Ett fint fotografimuseum som trots sin storlek har flera utställningar. När vi var där i slutet av september var det bra utställningar med intressanta berättelser/stories. Fin miljö i allmänhet. Plus för shopen och för det mysiga caféet. Dock inget ställe man stannar flera timmar på om man bara ska kolla utställningarna.
Fint museum
Er man til fotografier, er et besøg her absolut en fin oplevelse. Der bydes på skiftende udstillinger af det bedste indenfor foto. Har besøgt dette museum flere gange. Hver gang en god oplevelse
Foto-entusiasten elsker det
FOAM er et meget lille museum, men de udstillinger de har viser altid vigtige og dygtige fotografers arbejde. Indgangen kan virke pepret, men for mig var det altid et besøg værd (jeg havde dog også museumskaart i en længere periode da jeg netop var bosat i Amsterdam)
